Classic Standalone Emulator Setup

RetroArch fits many classic systems, but a standalone emulator remains useful when you already have a working setup or prefer its controls and display options.

Add a standalone emulator

  1. Open Platforms.
  2. Select the plus button.
  3. Search for the emulator.
  4. Choose automatic installation when offered.
  5. Otherwise, choose an existing installation and select the emulator executable.
  6. Add the matching system and ROM folder.
  7. Select the new platform.
  8. Test one game.

Reuse an existing setup

Select the same emulator folder used by your current saves and configuration. Moving to a fresh automatic install creates a separate setup unless you move the related data too.

Choose file extensions

Start with the extensions already working inside the emulator. Add archive extensions only when the emulator opens compressed games directly.

For multi-file disc games, select the cue or playlist file instead of each data track.

Keep systems separate

Create one HyperHQ system per console or handheld. A multi-system emulator still benefits from separate systems because each wheel keeps its own media, controls, BIOS needs, and ROM paths.

Common problems

The emulator opens without the game

Open the platform in HyperHQ and restore the recommended launch setting. Then test the same game path inside the emulator.

Games appear twice

Remove data-track extensions from the system. Keep cue, playlist, or primary ROM extensions.

Old saves are missing

The new emulator installation uses a different data folder. Point HyperHQ to the original installation or move the saves using the emulator’s own documented folder layout.
